Learning Services

The Bishop Verot Catholic High School Learning Services Department intends to fulfill the goal of Catholic Education by helping all children reach their full potential intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. It provides specific opportunities for students with documented special learning needs to reach their maximum ability. To this end, positive supports are provided through the collaboration of parents, students, and teachers.

Bishop Verot Catholic High School recognizes not all students learn in the same way. In order to help each student reach his or her full potential, Bishop Verot makes every effort to understand and provide for the diversity in learning styles of each of our students. The learning services department, in particular, works with students to help them develop strategies and study skills, assisting them in  becoming self-advocating, independent learners. Through collaborative consultation and teamwork with teachers, students, parents and administrators, the resource teacher works closely to plan, implement, and evaluate educational accommodations. The resulting Learning Support Plan provides additional support for those students who  have documented learning differences.

Learning Services Requirements

Space is limited in the Learning Service Program and requires a written acceptance. To be considered for the program, families must provide a current (within the last 3 years) Psycho-Educational Evaluation Report documenting a learning disability diagnosis. Due to our limited resources, we are unable to accept students with a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD alone.

Documentation

Students with diagnosed learning disabilities are required to provide specified documentation dated within 3 years to the Director of Admissions upon application to Bishop Verot Catholic High School. A diagnosis of ADD/ADHD or anxiety in and of themselves is not sufficient.

Learning Strategies

The purpose of Learning Strategies is to provide instruction enabling students with learning disabilities to acquire and use strategies and skills to enhance their independence as learners in educational and community settings. Course content includes, but is not limited to, the following: learning styles, time management and organization, test-taking, note-taking, outlining, comprehension and memory strategies, critical thinking, and self-advocacy skills. Academic progress is monitored on an ongoing basis by both student and teacher. After school tutorial attendance is required by all learning strategy stu-
dents.

Consultative Model

Students in the Learning Services Department who are not currently taking the Learning Strategies course are required to work with the Learning Services Coordinator on a consultative basis. Students will routinely conference with the coordinator in order to monitor their academic progress. Additionally, students are required to submit periodic assignments to the Canvas LS group. If these requirements are not fulfilled, the student risks losing accommodations provided by the Learning Services Program.
